Utilities Service Alliance and Curio Sign MOU for Nuclear Fuel Recycling and Fuel Supply for Its Members’ Nuclear Reactors

June 18, 2025 --

Today, during the annual USA Nuclear Generator & Supplier Executive Summit in Nashville, Curio, an innovative leader in advanced nuclear technologies, and Utilities Service Alliance, Inc. (USA), a non-profit cooperative that facilitates collaboration among electric utilities that own or operate nuclear power plants, signed a memorandum of understanding that will provide for collaboration and the potential for future supplier-partner agreements between Curio and the various USA utility members.

“This partnership with USA represents a strategic and significant step within the U.S. nuclear industry as it takes decisive steps to support future growth of the nation’s nuclear generation capacity in a sustainable and resource-efficient manner,” said Edward McGinnis, CEO of Curio and former (Acting) Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. “We look forward to working with its member utilities to help build a secure, efficient infrastructure for the ‘Second Nuclear Era.’”

Nuclear energy offers a clean, safe, and economically viable solution for meeting the soaring energy demands from AI, data centers, and beyond, while securing energy independence for the U.S.

As the first vertically integrated company focused on the U.S. closed fuel cycle, Curio’s NuCycle® technology recovers valuable materials from spent fuel, slashing high-level waste by up to 97% and emissions by up to 88%.

“The MOU between Curio and Utilities Service Alliance represents a bold step toward securing a sustainable future for nuclear energy,” said Karen Fili, President and CEO of Utilities Service Alliance, Inc. “By leveraging Curio’s advanced technology and vision, we’re opening the door to new opportunities for our members – enhancing economic value, strengthening supply chain resilience, and supporting innovation that aligns with USA’s unwavering commitment to our nuclear future.”

This announcement comes on the heels of President Trump’s recent Executive Order on nuclear power that calls for plans to be put in place by both the Departments of Energy and Defense to recycle our nation’s current stockpile of more than 90,000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel, and the 2,000 metric tons generated annually by civilian reactors and defense applications.

“By embracing nuclear fuel recycling, maximizing its uranium resources, and producing transuranic isotopes for advanced reactors, the U.S. is launching a closed nuclear fuel cycle economy—a game-changer for clean, reliable energy,” added McGinnis. “The nuclear renaissance is here, and at Curio, we’re thrilled to lead this charge in cooperation with our nation’s utilities.”

As part of this MOU and as Curio's used nuclear fuel recycling products and services become available, the parties intend to enter into good faith negotiations to establish a written supplier partner agreement signed by both Curio and USA for products and services including discounted uranium feedstocks and waste minimization services.

This agreement is strengthened by Curio’s previously announced MOUs for recycling services, offtake agreements and/or research partnerships with Energy Northwest, a USA member utility, Orano, NANO Nuclear, Lightbridge, and more. Curio has also signed R&D partnerships with four esteemed U.S. national laboratories, including Idaho National Lab (INL), Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), Pacific North National Lab (PNNL), and Sandia.
