BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont office of the United States Attorney says it helped collect more than $160 million in civil and criminal fines and fees in the 2017 fiscal year.

The bulk of the District of Vermont’s collections, $155 million, were part of an electronic health records settlement that began as a whistleblowing case first filed in Vermont.

On its own, the District of Vermont collected more than $4.6 million in criminal and civil actions last year.

The law requires defendants to pay restitution to victims of certain federal crime. Criminal fines and felony assessments are paid to the Department of Justice’s Crime Victims’ Fund, which distributes the funds to state victim compensation and victim assistance programs.
