Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 19 – Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin warned that the trade war between China and the United States will negatively affect developing countries, including Cambodia.

Wang Wenbin spoke on Saturday (Apr. 19) during a press conference held at the Chinese Embassy following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Cambodia.

In this context, China will work closely with countries in the region, particularly Cambodia, to safeguard a bilateral trade system rooted in the World Trade Organisation (WTO), while promoting a balanced, open, and inclusive trade policy.

Ambassador Wang noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping has encouraged more investors to invest in Cambodia and pledged to further open the Chinese market to Cambodian goods.

Wang Wenbin criticised the US for imposing what he called "unprincipled tariff measures," which he said have not only harmed the US itself but also had adverse impacts on developing countries. He expressed hope that the international community would unite to oppose unilateralism and protectionist policies.

The ambassador underscored, “China will cooperate with regional countries, especially Cambodia, to safeguard the bilateral trade system under the framework of the WTO and maintain a balanced, open, and inclusive policy. President Xi Jinping underlined that China will encourage more investors to invest in Cambodia, further open our market to Cambodian products, and increase imports of Cambodian agricultural goods. This support will provide Cambodia with more development opportunities and help it realize its goals of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.”

It should be noted that Cambodia responded promptly to the recent 49 per cent reciprocal tariff hike announced by the US. Following diplomatic efforts by Cambodia and other affected countries, the US government, under President Donald Trump, announced a 90-day suspension of the tariff increase on imports from nations that have formally requested negotiations, including Cambodia.
