Cuba celebrated Day of Africa

HAVANA, Cuba, May 27 (ACN) Cuban authorities, on behalf of the Cuban government and people, held on Monday, at the Jose Marti Memorial in Havana, the main ceremony in honor of Africa Day, a date commemorated this May 25.

Leading the ceremony were members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba Salvador Valdes Mesa, Cuban Vice President, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Teresa Amarelle Boue, secretary general of the Cuban Women's Federation, as well as Rosalie Kama Niamayoua, ambassador of the Republic of Congo to Havana and dean of the African Diplomatic Group in Cuba.

Valdes Mesa noted that the island is honored this year to commemorate multiple anniversaries of the establishment of diplomatic ties with several countries in the region, as a milestone in the struggle for sovereignty and independence where Cubans made clear the fulfillment of a historical debt with the African roots of the nation.
He stressed that Cuba's fraternity with the continent was forged in the struggles against colonialism, racism and apartheid, with the example and leadership of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

In this way, he defined as eternal the bonds of comradeship born in the battlefields where Cubans and Africans shed their blood together for African dignity.

The commemoration also serves to evoke the slaves who rose up in the sugar mills, the maroons in their free palenques, the African-blooded mambises who raised their machetes against the Spanish colonial power, he added.

At a time when the offensive against international medical cooperation is escalating, the Cuban vice president reaffirmed the island's commitment to maintain collaboration with a presence in more than 27 countries of the continent and more than 10,000 students graduated from the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).

The brotherhood between Cuba and Africa, founded on the blood of its best sons and daughters, is everlasting, he concluded.

Niamayoua recalled on this date Cuba's determined support to the struggles of Africa, as a result of the humanist work of Fidel, whose memory remains present in several countries of the region.

The diplomat highlighted the coincidence and the common positions of Cuba with the continental interests in the major international forums where the main global challenges are discussed today and in the commitment to collaboration and sustainable development without leaving anyone behind.

Every May 25, the world comes together to commemorate Africa Day, a date that transcends geographical boundaries to celebrate not only the cultural diversity and natural wealth of the world's most diverse continent, but also its determination to build a prosperous and united future.
