A Dhaka court has acquitted Monir Hossain, also known as 'Golden Monir', in a case involving illegal gold and foreign currency.

Judge Tahsin Iftekhar of Dhaka's Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court delivered the verdict on Sunday (May 5).

After the verdict, Public prosecutor Mahbubur Rahman told reporters that Golden Monir had been acquitted due to inconsistencies in the testimonies of the witnesses.

When asked whether he would appeal or not, the lawyer said he would decide about this after receiving the full copy of the verdict.

RAB arrested Golden Monir on November 21, 2020, along with seizing over 7 kg of illegal gold, Tk 6.25 million, and a significant amount of foreign currency from his possession.

The next day, a case related to gold and foreign currency was filed against him under Section 25(B) of the Special Powers Act, 1974.

On July 12, 2021, Investigating Officer (Inspector, DB) Abdul Malek pressed charges in the case.
